Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) Assessment and Intervention

Augmentative and alternative communication (or AAC), means all the ways that a person can communicate if they have trouble with their speech or language skills.

Here at Sips and Sounds, we are passionate about AAC and provide assessment and ongoing intervention required to support AAC use. For children who have difficulty with speech, AAC is a great tool to develop early on and children can be supported to develop language, reading and writing!

For adults, AAC can provide the right to communicate, however that is, with those that support them. It can allow a person to continue to participate in areas previous to an injury where speech was required. AAC can also be used to bring the simple joy of interacting with another human being in a meaningful way to someone's life.

Just some types of AAC:

  • Key Word Sign

  • Use of real objects and visual supports

  • Switching with voice output

  • Ipad and AAC app use for communication

  • Dedicated Voice Output systems

  • Eye Gaze technology

  • Use of environmental controls with communication devices

  • Voice amplifiers

Early Childhood Intervention

Early communication skills are important in determining later life learning and social outcomes.

Here at Sips and Sounds we have practiced exclusively in early intervention for babies and toddlers who are at risk of having a speech or language impairment, with the added complexity of motor based difficulties or neurological differences (such as cerebral palsy, down syndrome

and autism).

We have extensive experience in providing strengths based assessment and ongoing intervention to support your young child to develop speech, language and yes, even early literacy in a fun, play based approach.

Mealtime Management
for Adults

Sips and Sounds provides expertise in mealtime management for adults with a disability. For many adults growing up with a disability, eating and drinking skills can be impacted from an early age, but can also change and decline as a person gets older. This is why mealtime assessment by a Speech Pathologist is important to maintain both a safe, but enjoyable way to manage meals.

Here at Sips and Sounds we are passionate about providing recommendations that provide swallow safety with as minimal choking risk as possible, while also advocating for enjoyment and quality of life. We offer the following services:

  • Mealtime Assessment

  • Mealtime Management Plans

  • Support/Carer Training on Dysphagia and individual mealtime plan recommendations
